Yoav, an Israeli Defense Force soldier stationed in Hebron, was shot by an Arab sniper and left for dead. It happened very early in the morning, and no one else was awake to come to Yoav’s aid. Bleeding profusely, Yoav’s life was ebbing away, and quickly coming to a silent end.

But one soldier stationed further happened to hear the noise, and went to investigate. Seeing Yoav bleeding to death, he stabilized Yoav's wound and called for emergency transport to a medical facility. Waiting for help to arrive, he kept applying manual pressure to keep Yoav alive - literally holding Yoav's life in his hands.

Yoav was taken to a medical facility where he was treated by surgeons. Yoav's parents were notified and rushed to the hospital. The doctors told them that had it not been for the immediate actions of the other soldier, their son Yoav would not have survived. It was a miracle that the other soldier heard what no one else heard, and managed to locate Yoav as quickly as he did. The parents wanted to thank that soldier, but he had already left the hospital.

After recuperating at home, Yoav and his parents called the army to find out the name of the other soldier so they could thank him personally.

Unfortunately, that soldier's name was not recorded in the report, so they had no way of contacting him.

Yoav's parents owned a grocery store in Kiryat Malachi, so they put up a poster in their store, describing what happened and asking if anyone knew the identity of Yoav's savior. They figured that in a small country like Israel someone might know someone who knows someone else.

Months passed with no response. Finally, after a year, a customer at the store noticed the sign. She recalled that her son Doron had mentioned such an account in his army service to her, so she took her cellphone and called Doron.

Sure enough, Doron remembered the incident- it was he who had saved Yoav's life.

The families soon gathered for a joyful, tearful 'reunion'. Doron's mother pulled Yoav's mother aside and told her, "There is a specific reason why I came to your store today. You don't remember me, but twenty years ago, I was standing in your grocery lost and forlorn.

You and your husband noticed how sad I looked and asked me what was the matter. I explained that I was pregnant and was very overwhelmed. I was under a lot of financial, social and emotional pressure, and decided that the only way out was to get an abortion.

You both stopped everything, and sat with me calmly and lovingly. You listened to me and offered me encouragement and support. You made things look different, so I chose to keep my baby. I no longer live around here, but I happened to be passing through, so I stopped by your store to thank you for all you did for me. I named my precious baby Doron- a gift."

"My beloved Doron, who wouldn’t have been born if not for you, grew up to save your Yoav's life!"
