SHAME TITLE

By Oriana Fallaci

Translated from Italian by David A. Harris, American Jewish Committee

Shame on the recent suiciders procession in Italy who utter vile insults at Israel, holding up photos of Israelis on whose foreheads they drew swastikas, inciting people to hate Jews.

Shame on a bishop housed in the Vatican, found in Jerusalem with weapons and explosives in his Mercedes, who participated in that march, thanking the murderers of Jews in pizzerias and supermarkets in G-d's name, calling them "martyrs who go to death as to a party."

Shame on the France of "Liberty, Equality and Fraternity" where synagogues are torched, Jews are terrorized, and cemeteries profaned. Shame on Dutch, German and Danish youth who display the kaffiyeh like Mussolini's vanguard displayed the Fascist emblem.

Shame on Palestinian students who nurture anti-Semitism at European universities. Shame on Sweden for asking to withdraw the Nobel Peace Prize from Shimon Peres, to be left solely to Arafat. Shame on the Nobel Committee that makes choices based on politics and not merit.

Shame on the Italian government-controlled television stations who nurture anti-Semitism by crying only over Palestinian deaths, and minimizing Israeli deaths. Shame on talk shows with the scoundrels wearing turbans or kaffiyehs who extol the slaughter in New York and praise the massacres in Jerusalem, Haifa, Netanya, and Tel Aviv.

Shame on a press that is indignant when Israeli tanks surround the Church of the Nativity, but doesn't care that 200 Palestinian terrorists (among them Hamas and Al-Aksa leaders) armed with machine guns and explosives are welcome guests of the monks.

Shame on a well-known daily that emphasized in bold headlines dismissing Israeli intifada casualties as equal to the number of Israelis who die in road accidents (600 a year).

Shame on the l'Oservatore Romano, the pope's newspaper, that accused a people exterminated by the millions by Christians and Europeans, of extermination. Our people who still carry numbers on their arm are denied the right to defend themselves from extermination again by that same newspaper.

Shame on parish priests who flirt with the murderers of Jerusalemites who cannot go to eat a pizza or buy an egg without fear of being blown up.

Shame on them for siding with people who launched terrorism by killing us on planes, in airports, at the Olympics. Today the same people make sport of kidnapping Western journalists, slitting their throats and beheading them. (After publicizing my piece "Anger and Pride," they wanted to do it to me. Citing Koranic verses, they exhorted in the name of Allah to kill me, actually, to die with me.)

Shame on the Left that allowed a trade-union procession to place a coffin (a Mafia-like warning) in front of the synagogue in Rome, forgetting the contribution of the Jews to the anti-fascist struggle of Carlo and Nello Rosselli. For example; Leone Ginzburg, Umberto Terracini, Leo Valiani, Emilio Serani; of women as my friend Anna Maria Enriques Agnoletti, shot in Florence on June 12, 1944; of 74 of the victims of Fosse Ardeatine; of the many deaths by torture, combat or firing squad.

Shame that the Left that begins its congresses applauding PLO representatives, terrorizing Jews in Italy, in France and Holland and Denmark and Germany.

Shame that European Jews shudder as they trembled in Berlin during Kristallnacht, when Hitler began hunting the Jews. Shame that, obeying the vile, dishonest, and, for them, opportunistic fashion of political correctness, the opportunists exploit the word "peace."

Shame that "peace" is now a word more devalued than "love" and "humanity." They absolve just one side of hate and bestiality. In the name of pacifism, the same voices that once genuflected to Pol Pot, now incite confused, na ve people. They cheat and corrupt them, taking them back half a century to the yellow star on the coat.

Shame on Italians and Europeans who choose Arafat as a role model. Backed by Saudi money he acts like Mussolini and in his megalomania wants to go down in history as the GeorgeWashington of Palestine. When I interviewed this uneducated man, he couldn't put together a complete sentence, an articulate thought. This 'warrior' marches around in uniform like Pinochet, yet never participated in a single battle, leaving war to other unfortunates.

This pompous incompetent killed the Camp David negotiations. "No, no, I want all of Jerusalem." This eternal liar has a flash of sincerity only when he denies Israel's right to exist. As I wrote in my book, lies every five seconds. He plays a game of duplicity; never trust him. Never! In the '70s, when I interviewed him, this eternal terrorist trained the Baader-Meinhof terrorists. Now he trains (Palestinian) children ten years old. Poor kids.

This opportunist keeps his wife in Paris, but keeps his people in dung. From the dung he sends them to kill and to die, like the 18-year-old girls who, to achieve equality with men, have to fill themselves with explosives and blow themselves up with their victims. Yet Italians love him, - as they loved Mussolini.

Shame on a malevolent and repulsive new fascism and nazism nourished by hypocrites who play the good guys, progressives, communists, pacifists, Catholics and Christians who have the gall to call those like me who cry the truth a warmonger.

I've argued often and bitterly with the Israelis. In the past I defended the Palestinians. But I am now with Israel, I am with the Jews. I am with them now, I defend their right to exist and defend themselves.

Shame on Italian and European anti-Semitism that dishonors my country and many others in Europe.
